What is the registry and the registrar?

 

 

The registry is the authority that manages the database with each domain information.

The registry differs by domain, for example ".com/.net" is managed by VerSign.

All registrars are required to be neutral by ensuring to be equalize access to the SRA(*1).

A Registrar certified by ICANN(*2) is a domain registrar with a contract directly with a registry, with adequate resources, motivations, technology and business capabilities based on the non-profit ICANN Registrar Certification Policy and Registrar Certification Policy. Registrars enter into a registry-registrar agreement with each registry and are enabled to use SRS to register domain information directly in the registry database.

*1  SRS(The Shared Registry System) is a software related to a protocol with a system that allows many registrars to provide domain registration services, with an agreement reached by the registry and the US government. The agent with a Registry-Registrar Agreement with a registry, that is certified by ICANN, can operate the business as a registrar.

*2  ICANN, stands for The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, is a non-profit organization established under the policy of transferring the management responsibility of domain name registration services, IP address and more, that carried out by the us government and agency, to the non-profit organization by the private internet stakeholders.rate the business as a registrar.
