.com stands for commercial and is one of the oldest gTLD (general top-level domain). 

It's also the most common and recognized domain along with .org (stands for a non-profit organization) and .net (stands for network-aware), that anyone in the world wants to register their domain name ending with .com whether or not their website is going to be used for commercial purpose.
